About this trip

Twice a year in the Sea of Cortez, you can witness with your very own eyes, the biggest Ray migration in the whole world! They flock in their tens of thousands in search of the cold upwellings of nutrient rich water in search of food and luuuurve!

Join us on our Mobula Ray expedition in Baja California Sur! You'll get the chance to witness the incredible migration of these flying tortillas as they swim in huge groups called "fevers". We will take you on an unforgettable journey, swimming alongside these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Mobula rays have a slow reproduction rate of 1 pup every 1-2 years, so although we see them in their tens of thousands, they are still on the vulnerable list.

Baja Wild Encounters was born from a passion for wildlife and sustainability. Starting as a one-man effort by Jamie to reduce overfishing and create ethical tourism, we’ve grown into a dedicated team. Ana keeps operations running smoothly, Sofía handles reservations with care, and Elias, now a key guide, shares his deep knowledge of Baja’s marine life. We specialise in small-group adventures that prioritise unforgettable experiences while protecting wildlife and ecosystems. Welcome to the Baja Wild Encounters family!

Very knowledgeable guide, LaRue, and excellent captain. Whales, rays, two pods of dolphin, and swimming with sea lions. Highly recommend.

The snorkeling and whale watching trip was a highlight of our time in La Ventana. Our tour guide, Elias, was so friendly and full of energy, and very passionate about the ecosystem. He and the boat driver, Thomas, were knowledgeable and very focused on minimizing disturbance to the wildlife, which I really appreciated. I was impressed how they could spot animals from so far away. We saw a lot of wildlife and snorkeling with the Mobula rays was really cool. Stopping at the Isla Cerralvo for lunch and a snorkel was also amazing. Overall, a great day trip!

We had a great day on the water! Jamie and Diego were very informative and flexible to the wants of the group. We appreciate how they respect the sea life and their environment. Highlight was finding a pod of 500+ dolphins! What an amazing experience!

Had the best time EVER!!!!! I knew I was going to enjoy this trip and therefore booked it two days in a row - it was an unforgettable experience. The days were well organised - I was picked up on time and everything went as promised. The guides were so wonderful - fun, informative with a great knowledge of the whales and an obvious love for them and their wellbeing. My guides were Mikel & Alba - both AWESOME. There were plenty of whales to see - they were everywhere. It was nice that the boat Captain didn’t intrude on the whales - we kept our distance and let the whales come to us if they were curious about the strange animals that drove around in boats. We had a good few instances where a friendly whale would come very close to the boat - almost close enough to touch but not quite this time. They really are the most amazing creatures - I’ve always been in awe of them. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone - it was an experience I will always remember fondly and hope to do again some day

Amazing, spectacular, incredible! All the best words. Honestly, its hard to put words to the experience, as it's pure magic. If you're contemplating a trip to go see the Grey Whales, do it!! Jamie will make it extra fun, he is hilarious! Every aspect of the trip is full of adventure, it felt like summer camp on the water. I really hope I have the opportunity to do this expedition again, interacting with the whales is like being in a dream. If not, I know the memories from this last trip will last a lifetime. Thank you Jamie and team!

The perfect trip doesn’t exis…..but WAIT! Oh, YES! it does! Baja Wild Encounters really delivered- and not just an ecotour, but an experience. The adventure and the wildlife were as much the main event as the hospitality-the people, the amazing food (prepared fresh daily by local chefs ) and of course, the cliffside beachfront accommodations! I journeyed to Baja California Sur to join the 8 day mobula ray expedition with Baja Wild Encounters and it went above and beyond my expectations! I found Baja Wild Encounters on Instagram and was immediately wowed by the amount and biodiversity of wildlife they featured on their Instagram account. I can tell you it’s just as amazing in person as it is online because we not only saw mobula rays but also orcas, blue whales, dolphins and many others-including some rare encounters like the dwarf sperm whale! We even dropped a hydrophone in the water to listen to sperm whales. Very cool! All of the guides were very knowledgeable and respectful of the animals we were viewing and their environment, with an emphasis on viewing them on their terms. We spent 5 days on the boat, but when not on the boat we enjoyed world class family-style meals, chilled by the pool or fire, visited local restaurants, and did some exploring -one of the side excursions was a night SUP with lights looking for wildlife that’s active at night. And it wouldn’t be complete without some 2000s Usher Karaoke, but Jamie can tell you more about that! Really, this trip was a breath of fresh air -8 hrs a day of it to be exact while cruising around the Sea of Cortez. It’s better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times so book this trip! All you need is a sense of adventure... and a wetsuit!
