Before You Book: Course Requirements

Please review the course requirements & prerequisites below for all courses:

  • Must have at least 1 year of manual therapy experience. (May include clinic hours from massage school).
  • Must meet your state/country's massage licensure requirements.
  • Must have current liability/malpractice insurance in the state/country where you practice (no exceptions).
  • Sarga Bodywork does not have specific age/weight restrictions for students. However each instructor reserves the right to require a limit of height and weight for Safety Considerations on Raised Massage Tables www.sargabodywork.com/prepare. The weight and height limit for this particular course is: 165lbs and/or 5’10”
  • Fitness level is especially important for Sarga Bodywork practices on raised massage tables.

Here are 4 fitness measurements that can help to gauge your ability to learn and perform Sarga Bodywork with success:

1. The ability to balance on one foot for at least 1 minute without holding onto anything for support. Please note: excessive ankle inversion or supination can limit your ability in class as well as ankle injuries with limited dorsiflexion. We highly recommend ankle and knee stabilizing exercises to be prepared for this course.

2. Excellent cardiovascular conditioning and the ability to perform cardiovascular exercise (jogging, swimming, etc.) for 10-15 minutes without stopping.

3. The ability to perform at least 3 sets of 20 squats.

4. The ability to isometrically hold a plank for at least 1 minute.

If you do not feel confident that you could meet these four requirements or if the location equipment and classroom cannot accommodate the height and weight parameters above, but you would still like to attend a Sarga Bodywork course, then our floor-based courses would be the best fit for you! Please contact sarga@sargabodywork.com directly for floor based course inquiries. While basic strength and conditioning is still important here, a floor-based practice provides practitioners a much wider and more stable working area, and fitness level is less of a consideration.

Reviews

I immediately booked Sarga 102 after completing Sarga 101, thinking it would be the same material, only afterwards I found out it would be a combination of raised and floor work. This is not what I wanted but reassured myself I would be learning something anyway so I kept my reservation for the class. The teacher definitely knows the course material and all of the anatomy involved with it. What she lacks though is helping others understand how to effectively execute the moves. She has one way of explaining things, and when the students are confused it's met with condescension and repeating what she said even louder. I was often left feeling like I was an idiot and a fool, even though I am completely comfortable on the table doing Sarga. Class time was not used effectively in both 101 or 102. It always seemed rushed and we were then criticized for not learning or practicing quickly enough. If the teacher needs more time to teach, then add more days to the course. Rushing through everything makes it seem like it's all about the paycheck and not about effectively spreading Sarga knowledge. This teaching environment is impossible to truly learn in. We only had 2 days for 102 and I had the same partner the entire time. My partner had just finished 101 the week before and couldn't use the sarga silk effectively enough to balance on one foot on the table, which meant I only got to feel the moves when Amy came around and rushed through the sequence. Letting this student take 101 let alone 102 seemed like another money grab. When this student was doing the sacrum straddle move she was so wobbly I was afraid for my safety. I firmly believe students shouldn't be allowed to take 101 and 102 so close together. From experience I'm glad I had 6 months to gain confidence in the silk wrapping and footwork before taking on more advanced moves. Further issues with my partner were that they couldn't handle even firm pressure when I was practicing. They were constantly squirming on the table to get comfortable, making it impossible for me to practice the moves as well. I would have loved to have swapped out partners at least once. When I was doing my certification I was encouraged to have as many kinds of bodies under my feet as possible, to then in class be stuck to one person for 14 hours was counterintuitive. This also limited what I could do and the feedback I could receive. Thanks for taking these notes into consideration. Thanks Mary
By Mary E for COMBO FLOOR & RAISED TABLE: 101 & 102 SLC ( APR 2024) on Apr 25, 2024
Mary, this review is received and I have submitted changes to SB for future courses based on your feedback. However, there are some points I would like to clear for all to read. 1. The curriculum was not altered at all. The only thing that changed was the title of the course; most specifically for 101 as I was adapting to include floor based practitioners (if they came forward; which they did not). Floor was not taught in SLC. 102 does have a mix of standing floor to raised table as listed in the outline when you signed up. So I believe there was a misunderstanding in your interpretation of what the course would be and it explicitly says that no review of 101 would be done in 102’s course outline just new techniques. 2. If class time was not used effectively to your standard in 101, why return to my class in 102? 3. After 6 months of your practice you were not much farther along than some of the 101 students. We all are still learning and they advantage of taking 102 directly after 101 is more time in the silks, further muscle memory and a mixed cohort. Application of mayo.rub and barefoot technique in 102 is just as challenging for a new or return student. 4. I am highly adaptable and provide many tools for learning in and out of the classroom. If you would have made any of your concerns known they could have been remedied in real time. The only request I made in class was to keep the set up from Day 1 of equipment. Anyone could have changed partners, but no one did; and that was the 1st time ever in all my 8 years of teaching this modality. Each partner is there for us to learn from but the real learning continues after the course once all things are implemented in practice in your own time and space. No one comes out of these classes a pro. Refinement is necessary. 5. Your partner was adept and versed in the material as were all the others who made it to 101. They could take deep pressure from the instructor in the demo. Inability to take deep pressure from a student partner often has to do with various intricacies like Myo.rub application (too much or too little), confidence in the silk tension & wrap, as well as accurate placement of the foot as not to bear down on joints and endangerment sites. The 1st and later were mostly what I saw you struggling with in class. To sum it up I have submitted changes for a future at 1:02 course to become a three day course including a lab so people have more time to practice. I highly recommend for anyone taking any Sarga Bodywork course to read all the material and go over all class videos before and during the course to, familiarize themselves with all the new material that will be coming. Also, taking note of the anatomy portion of the course manual so that there is no question of certain bony landmarks and target muscles we will be accessing in class. It is true that not every instructor is for every student and I am definitely not for the masses. However, if you choose to return to a 102 course, there are often free retakes with other instructors.

Amy was a great teacher. Although the course was very challenging both physically and mentally, she communicated the techniques in a clear and concise way. I highly recommend

Amy works hard to help workshop participants understand, feel, and learn Sarga Bodywork techniques. Amy provided a comfortable and “safe space” environment where she always took the time to work with each participant individually and to meet them at their own abilities/experience to better improve their learning. Couldn’t ask for more, thank you Amy!
