Your host, Hobby

Hobby Parent is an artist, teacher and coach living and working in her home & studio West of Charlottesville, Virginia, in view of her beloved Blue Ridge Mountains, enjoying nature and its vast sources of artistic inspiration. She works in acrylics, watercolor and mixed media, as well as graphic design. She began painting, drawing and illustrating in high school, although she has been an artist for as long as she can remember. Throughout her young life she was asked to draw or illustrate images for friends and earned her nickname “Hobby” from drawing  dozens of horses in grade school.

She is especially intrigued by organic elements from nature expressing her love of the outdoors. Combining a number of mixed media techniques inspired by natural objects, vintage collections, color & form, as well as abstract and cosmic elements, her compositions create a uniquely mystical union.

Hobby attended Mary Washington College with a major in Studio Art under the tutelage of Joseph DiBella and developed a love of Art History under Joseph Dreiss.  John Lamph, an abstract interpreter of intuitive feelings, influenced by Japanese printmaking and Zen philosophy, was another influence at MWC.

Through continuous and dedicated learning about art and design later at community college, she was lead to a career in marketing and production, becoming well versed in digital skills required for logo design, marketing collateral, advertising, presentation and publication for a number of large companies.  Social media marketing and web design are technical skills she acquired through continuing education and has applied in free lance and community service projects.

Her inspiration comes from well known women artists such as Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keefe as well as lesser known Elyssa Rundle. The influence of art techniques by Flora Bowley and Tracy Verdugo, map making by Jill K Berry and the textile art of Liz Kettle, along with hours of perusing museum exhibits are often incorporated into Hobby’s work.

She belongs to a lineage of artists beginning with Lenora StraussSue Hoya Sellers, and she has been fortunate to study with and be inspired by their protégé, Artist & Maestra Shiloh Sophia McCloud Lewis, in the Intentional Creativity Method of painting. Hobby’s grandfather, Ernest Brooks, was an artist and both her adopted parents, Tomboy & Hilda Hobbs, were musicians, crafters, and home builders.

Through online mixed media education, as well as in-studio instruction, the craft of spiritual journey, sacred mark making, and intuitive art is a culmination of Hobby’s past education and current pursuit of expressive arts in healing and transformation for women and all people.

“My intention for art and paintings is to inspire and uplift those who view my work, challenging them to see beyond what is visible to the eye, connecting with their heart. I make marks, choose colors, intuitively expressing my passion and what arrives through visioning and art journaling as I connect with the canvas and paint. The ability to make art, teach, coach and use creativity to inspire and heal is a great privilege.”

Your Host, Christine

Christine Brodmerkel MACP. Certified Professional Coach, ELI-MP

Christine is a healer with a mission to support deep personal transformation for growth-minded people. From an early age, she studied psychology, alternative healing, nature and nutrition, and found her way to coaching after formally training and practicing as a psychotherapist.

“Coaching allows me to work with a wide variety of people through a strength-based orientation. It doesn’t matter who you are. You have a power inside of you that can be harnessed in the direction of your choosing. I help clients awaken to their innate self, reorient to the problem at hand, and ignite action.”

With both great respect for what she calls the “condition of being human,” and her light-hearted approach, she easily identifies her clients’ strengths and resources while deftly helping name challenges, road blocks, snake pits, and white-outs that hinder progress. Her coaching style supports client-centered insight and client-led direction through use of mindfulness, creative imagination, and developing access to inner wisdom.

Christine has a philosophy of holism, that healing must include the whole organism and that all tangible and intangible parts are interrelated. She coaches from an integrative perspective, which invites input from, and exploration of, body, mind, emotions, and spiritual or philosophical aspects of self to attain broader and often hidden perspectives. She believes transformation occurs when we provide support across our whole being and our psyche to experience integration.

Christine is a Certified Professional Coach (CPC) from the world-class Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC). She received her formal psychotherapy training from The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, California, and is an intermediate level Somatic Experiencing practitioner. Her on-going healing interests include medical herbalism and nutrition for the treatment of chronic illness, developing insights and intuition through meditation, and harnessing the insights of neuroscience in the treatment of mental and physical disorders of depression and anxiety. She is an outdoor enthusiast, runs a tree care service with her husband, finds it fun to research and trade stocks, and loves playing guitar, piano and singing.
