      About this trip

Oaxaca City is host to the most famous indigenous gathering of it’s kind in all of Mexico…..La Guelaguetza!  Enjoy the mountain air while experiencing an extraordinary, once-a-year cultural event. La Guelaguetza is a summer festival in which all seven major indigenous communities come to the city to present traditional dancing, costumes, parades, walking bands, native food, and artisanal crafts.  Get ready to delight your senses as we stroll through textile museums, sit down for a mezcal tasting, mole and more.  This tour includes a visit to the preeminent pre-Columbian archeological site Monte Albán.  We will travel to nearby villages and enjoy studio visits for uniquely specialized crafts such as rug weaving with natural dyes, rebozo and back-strap weaving, black clay pottery and more.

Our fiber Ambassador is Janie Cravens. A resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico, she has traveled and lived extensively in the country of Mexico for over 40 years.

La Guelaguetza parades and street fun will be going on continually during our stay!

      Tour Cost, per person:

      • Single ($4100, per person) - a private accommodation for one person
      • Shared ($3650, per person) - one room for two people, two separate beds

IMPORTANT DETAILS TO KEEP IN MIND

      Tour Activity Level:
We would describe this trip as a Retreat with significant walking on cobblestone paving. If you'd like to review our trip activity levels, take a look here

This trip needs at least 10 participants in order to proceed (i.e. the trip is "guaranteed"). Once the tour is a guaranteed departure, our regular Terms and Conditions apply for cancellation (click here to see our Terms and Conditions).

      Travel Insurance
Rowan Tree Travel highly recommends purchasing travel insurance. You may purchase through our preferred partner Arch RoamRight by clicking here or through your own provider.

      Arranging Your Flights

We highly recommend American or United Airlines above all others for this specific tour.

Currently there are only two airlines that will get you to our destination without going through Mexico CIty, both of which hub out of Texas. The United flight does not arrive until evening; the American flight arrives in the afternoon.

While you may find less expensive flights we do not advise going through Mexico City.

Once our tour is guaranteed with the minimum number of travelers, we will notify all registrants to begin making travel arrangements. You may do so on your own or work with our booking agent, Vivienne Kelly at Crystal Travel. She can assist in identifying the best itinerary for your needs, coordinate with other participants, and take care of ticket purchase, seat selection and upgrades. Contact her at (617) 327‐2700 (EST) or vivienne@crystal‐travel.com.

In order to gather easily for the tour, we provide an arrival and departure "window" at a major transportation hub - typically an international airport at your destination country. Flights scheduled outside the provided windows may result in additional transportation costs and missed tour activities. For this reason, we greatly appreciate your cooperation in booking travel that accommodates our specifications.

      Please Note the Following
Rowan Tree Travel reserves the right to alter any part of this itinerary in order to address weather conditions, unforeseen circumstances or to improve the participant experience.

Our trips are categorized as Retreat, Woolly Wander, or Expedition. We would describe this trip as a Retreat. If you'd like to review our trip activity levels, take a look here.
