An exciting new development for Wool & Whisky, our signature tour! Since we're offering it later in the fall, we'll be in Scotland for The Glasgow School of Yarn festival. Oh my. And whisky... Let’s not forget the whisky! We’ll have the world’s best distilleries all around us as we travel through the heart of Scotland. It’s going to be an absolutely unbeatable, sheep-on-green-hillsides, kilt-sighting, bagpipes-echoing, sticky-toffee-pudding-tasting adventure. Two nights in the Scottish Borders, two nights in Edinburgh, two nights in Highland Perthshire and four nights in Glasgow. Join us!

Tour Cost, per person:

Single ($6200, per person) - a private accommodation for one person
Shared ($4800, per person) - one room for two people, your choice of one shared bed or two separate beds

Travel Insurance
Rowan Tree Travel highly recommends purchasing travel insurance. You may purchase through our preferred partner Arch RoamRight by clicking here or through your own provider.

Arranging Your Flights
Once our tour is guaranteed with the minimum number of travelers, we will notify all registrants to begin making travel arrangements. You may do so on your own or work with our booking agent, Vivienne Kelly at Crystal Travel. She can assist in identifying the best itinerary for your needs, coordinate with other participants, and take care of ticket purchase, seat selection and upgrades. In order to gather easily for the tour, we provide an arrival and departure "window" at a major transportation hub - typically an international airport at your destination country. Flights scheduled outside the provided windows may result in additional transportation costs and missed tour activities. For this reason, we greatly appreciate your cooperation in booking travel that accommodates our specifications.

The Scottish Borders
Welcome to Scotland! An overnight flight will get you to Edinburgh Airport. Your RTTF Fiber Ambassador will meet you there for a warm welcome. Once everyone is gathered, we'll have a gentle first day getting to know a bit about the history of Scottish textiles (and checking out their current yarn and textile offerings) at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, New Lanark. Just nearby is the Clyde Falls. We can stretch our legs with a walk there. Weather permitting, we'll stop to meet a nearby yarn farmer and pet a sheep or two. Then we'll drive through the rolling hills of the Borders to our favorite hotel situated on the banks of the River Tweed. So much deep history here. Our time in the Borders includes a visit at the Great Tapestry of Scotland, Melrose Abbey, Abbotsford (the former home of Sir Walter Scott) and a wee castle dating back to the 12th century.

EDINBURGH
The city of Edinburgh welcomes us with its incredible skyline and gracious buildings. We'll explore it from the heights of Calton Hill to the spooky, underground vaults beneath the Royal Mile. Fancy a mini yarn crawl of our favorite shops? How about a visit at the Scottish Malt Whisky Society and a meetup with the editor of the Journal of Scottish Yarns? You'll have time to explore the city on your own as well. Edinburgh is lively, completely walkable and full of wonderful nooks and crannies. Or should we say, wynds and closes!?!? And as we finish our time there, we'll meet up with knitwear designers Di Gilpin and Sheila Greenwell for a fantastic, hands-on workshop at their studio in Fife. We've got a few fun stops to make in their neighborhood as well, including a tiny but fantastic wool shop in the wee seaside town of Pittenweem.

THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS
Northward we go… into beautiful Perthshire. Based in the Highland village of Pitlochry, we’ll explore both the landscape and handcrafting traditions of the area. Our own Lindsay Roberts will conduct a stitching workshop for everyone. Another day will be spent learning about the area’s botanical bounty with local chocolatier, Charlotte Flower. Charlotte infuses wildcrafted ingredients like Scottish pine, elderberry and wild roses into her chocolate creations. She’ll teach us a thing or two about working with chocolate while we make some goodies together. Visits in the area also include a curated look at the special collections of The Highland Folk Museum plus a tour and tasting at Aberfeldy Distillery. Plenty of time too for fresh-air walks, popping in and out of shops and cozy knitting sessions at our hilltop hotel.

The Glasgow Festival of Yarn
Oh, it's hard to leave the Highlands. But there's so much still ahead: like a visit, lunch and workshop with iconic knitwear designer Louisa Harding at her new cafe in Tyndrum. How about a day of exploring vibrant Glasgow? It's bursting with cutting edge design, beautiful neighborhoods and so much to see and do. Then we'll have two solid days at The Glasgow Festival of Yarn. You can get to know all the Scottish yarn purveyors and designers, take workshops galore or just sit and knit among the "weegees". (That's short for Glaswegians.) So. Much. Fibery. Goodness.

Lindsay Roberts, aka "The Border Tart," will be your fabulous Fiber Ambassador as she takes you through the history and textiles of Scotland, sharing its rich culture and heritage all the while. Lindsay is a dyer, stitcher, maker, sharer and lover of words. She hand-dyes natural fiber yarns using indigo and a range of colored dyes.
